One of the best methods to stop cough

This method had been tested by many people. One of the best methods to stop cough.

Cut off the top part of the orange, put some salt into the orange, and put back the top part. Steam it for 10 minutes and eat all the fresh including the juice at the bottom of the bowl. Taste not very nice but cures your prolonged cough in days.
Hi, friends, I tried it before its work! My mom in law taught me when my son was coughing at night time but my method is without adding the salt. I just steam in the rice cooker. No harm trying!!!
Cut off a little shelf of top.

Add 1 teaspoon of salt

Place in a bowl and steam it 20 minute

Finish it

Don't forget to finish the water left in the bowl. Its taste sour and salty, good for cure.

Malaysia News, Pudu Plaza

Pudu Plaza is a choice place for senior citizens to hang out

STEP into Pudu Plaza any day and you are bound to see many elderly folk loitering in the complex in Jalan Landak, Kuala Lumpur.

For years, this place has been their place to congregrate. Some of them can be seen sitting at the entrance of the complex, while others hang out outside a snooker centre at the Family Entertainment Centre watching cue artistes potting black.

As these snooker players take their aim, the “prize” for their friendlies is of course money — in the form of betting.

A short walk away is a food court where the senior citizens — men and women included — spend their time chatting or reading newspapers while the lonely ones can be seen taking a nap on stools.

Whiling away time: A group of old folks patronising a hawker centre.

A food stall operator, when asked, said children of the old folks would drop them at the plaza in the morning. The seniors will laze around till about 7pm before going home.

“They are a common sight,” she said, adding that the old folks number between 80 and 100.

“Some of them have families while others don’t.”

Another outlet which is a favourite haunt for these people is a video machine and gaming centre. The outlet seemed to be heavily guarded.

A senior citizen who was seen sitting alone on the concrete seats near the entrance of the complex, said he is an odd-job worker and hangs around waiting for jobs.

He said Pudu Plaza is popular with them because there are areas for them to sit, unlike elsewhere where there are none.

Old complex: The Pudu Plaza at Jalan Landak in Kuala Lumpur.

“Some old folks also come here because they don’t have enough money to spend, so when they are out with friends, their friends help buy them food.”

An elderly man who wanted to be known only as Lee from Taman Maluri, when met at the snooker centre, said he frequents the place at regular intervals to pass time.

“Many of them are retired. Where else can they go or what can they do if they don’t spend their time here?” he asked.

However, he disagreed that these people do not have money to spend.

“You can see that money is involved when they are playing (snooker). Of course, they have money, most likely given by their children.”

He also said the notorious side of what many have come to know about the Pudu area is the women from China and their services.

He said these girls would hide behind escalators to avoid prying eyes.

Daily routine: A group playing snooker at the Family Entertainment Centre in Pudu Plaza.

“You may not be able to identify her character, because you are a woman. They don’t look at you. But it is easy for us — men — to know that they are from China and offering those kind of services,” said Lee.

Another senior citizen known as Ng, from Pandan Jaya, said all of his children are already grown-up and busy working, so it was natural for him and his wife to just come out instead of “locking” themselves at home.

His 60-year-old wife is still working. The 70-year-old Ng has retired, and said he would often jog from his house to the complex.

His children do not send him here. He said: “I would jog. I have been jogging for the past 20 years, so distance is not a problem for me.”

He does not think old folks have any other place to go to, other than Pudu Plaza and Genting Highlands.

And of course, he is very much aware of the presence of the girls from China, saying there were many of them although the number has dwindled slightly.

Asked how old folks can afford the services of these Chinese girls since they may not have that much money, Ng claimed the girls do not charge high rates and that some are regular customers who can afford to pay.

“But these girls are not for me, I don’t indulge in such things,” he said.

Another man in his 70s who calls himself Choi Hong, said he is single without any family members.

He is staying in a PPR flat shared with two other occupants and his only income is RM300 a month from the Welfare Department as he is no longer working.

“I come here everyday. I have my bus pass that lets me to travel here.”

When asked why he does not join the others in playing snooker, he said the game is not for him and does not like mixing with some of the patrons inside.

Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, when contacted, believes that there aren’t any recreational places like a park for old folks in the Bukit Bintang area or even in Kuala Lumpur, for that matter.

“The government should have a place like a park for old folks to play tai chi or chess. Otherwise, they would feel lonely and have nowhere to go to.

“This scenario here has been going on for the last 20 years or so,” he said.

Asked whether the China girls were the lure for them to be there, Fong said the old folks have been patronising the place even before the girls from China arrived.

The National Council of Senior Citizens Organisations Malaysia (Nacscom) president Datuk Lum Kin Tuck, when contacted, said he had often highlighted the plight of old folks to the government but because he had no substantial proof to show about the pathetic situation, nothing much is being done to address the problem.

“The government should be taking care of senior citizens like setting up day centres in various parts of Kuala Lumpur with activities for them.

“It is the government’s responsibility to take care of the elderly in desperate need, or we are going against the national policy of ageing,” said the 93-year-old Lum.

He said Nacscom has four day centres where old folks can sing, dance, play indoor games or read in the library, but these are not located in KL due to the high rental which Nacscom was unable afford.

“Unless the government comes in with aid to help with the set-up of the day centres, the old folks in Pudu will continue spending their money and wasting their time at the entertainment centre which is probably not for them,” he said.

No hairdresser

A woman was walking down the street when she was approached by a
particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked her for a couple of dollars for dinner.

The woman took out her bill fold, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If
I give you this money, will you use it to buy some wine with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago." The homeless woman replied.

"Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?" The woman
asked.

"No. I don't waste time shopping." The homeless woman said. "I need
to spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?" The woman
asked.

"Are you NUTS!" Replied the homeless woman. "I haven't had my hair done In 20 years!"

"Well," said the woman, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out for dinner with my hubby and myself tonight."

The homeless Woman was astounded. "Won't your hubby be furious with you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, And I probably smell pretty disgusting."

The woman replied, "That's okay. It's important for him to see what a
Woman looks like after she has given up shopping, hair appointments, and wine!"

MORNING JOKES

When I Say I am Broke, I am Broke

A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner.

"Good morning," said the young man. "If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners."

"Go away!" said the old lady. "I am broke and haven' t got any money!" and she proceeded to close the door.

Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open. "Don' t be too hasty!" he said. "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration."

And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet. "Now, if this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder."

The old lady stepped back and said, "Well let me get you a fork, because they cut off my electricity this morning."

Easy cures for missing corners

Missing Corner in the southwest: In the original Ba gua theory, Kun gua stays in the southwest. In the aspect of manifestation of the family, Kun gua represents the mother, female household, female over 45 years old, Chinese zodiac Ram and zodiac Monkey people; in the aspect of manifestation of the human body, Kun gua represents the abdomen, etc.

Once the house misses the southwest corner, there are corresponding symptoms happening to the people in the house. For example, people living in this type of house easily suffer the stomach problems, appendix problems, beriberi, back pain skin disease and etc. If the interior design and outside environment are not well cooperated, it can be more serious. The traditional way is to place the Ox in the missing southeast corner because ox is the manifestation of Kun gua.

But don't place the ox closer to the south region of that missing corner. Because according to the zodiac theory, the ox is against the ram. And the zodiac Ram is sitting right in the southwest but closer to south region. If the ox is placed in this part, it can't be functional due to the affection of zodiac Ram. Besides the problems that we mentioned before, the protrusion in the southwest region causes the digest system diseases and sometimes people who living in this type of house gets fat with a big belly.

The traditional cure is to place horse statue in that corner. Because horse is the manifestation of Qian gua, here the Qian gua balances the ill developed energy of Kun gua.

Bladder Exercise Tips

Kegel Exercise Tips

What are Kegel exercises?

To do Kegel exercises, you just squeeze your pelvic floor muscles. The part of your body including your hip bones is the pelvic area. At the bottom of the pelvis, several layers of muscle stretch between your legs. The muscles attach to the front, back, and sides of the pelvic bone.

Kegel exercises are designed to make your pelvic floor muscles stronger. These are the muscles that hold up your bladder and help keep it from leaking.

Building up your pelvic muscles with Kegel exercises can help with your bladder control.

How do you exercise your pelvic muscles?

Find the right muscles. Try one of the following ways to find the right muscles to squeeze.

  • Imagine that you are trying to stop passing gas. Squeeze the muscles you would use. If you sense a “pulling” feeling, you are squeezing the right muscles for pelvic exercises.

  • Imagine that you are sitting on a marble and want to pick up the marble with your vagina. Imagine “sucking” the marble into your vagina.

  • Lie down and put your finger inside your vagina. Squeeze as if you were trying to stop urine from coming out. If you feel tightness on your finger, you are squeezing the right pelvic muscles.

Let your doctor, nurse, or therapist help you. Many people have trouble finding the right muscles. Your doctor, nurse, or therapist can check to make sure you are doing the exercises correctly. You can also exercise by using special weights or biofeedback. Ask your health care team about these exercise aids.

Don’t squeeze other muscles at the same time. Be careful not to tighten your stomach, legs, or other muscles. Squeezing the wrong muscles can put more pressure on your bladder control muscles. Just squeeze the pelvic muscle. Don’t hold your breath.

Repeat, but don’t overdo it. At first, find a quiet spot to practice—your bathroom or bedroom—so you can concentrate. Lie on the floor. Pull in the pelvic muscles and hold for a count of 3. Then relax for a count of 3. Work up to 10 to 15 repeats each time you exercise. Use the Exercise Log below to keep track of your sessions.

Do your pelvic exercises at least three times a day. Every day, use three positions: lying down, sitting, and standing. You can exercise while lying on the floor, sitting at a desk, or standing in the kitchen. Using all three positions makes the muscles strongest.

Be patient. Don’t give up. It’s just 5 minutes, three times a day. You may not feel your bladder control improve until after 3 to 6 weeks. Still, most women do notice an improvement after a few weeks.

How vitamin pills could save you from a heart attack

Lifesavers? A new treatment for heart disease could be a simple vitamin tablet

Lifesavers? A new treatment for heart disease could be a simple vitamin tablet

Cholesterol famously comes in two versions - the good and the bad. Heart health, we're told, depends on lowering the bad (LDL) cholesterol, and pushing up the good (HDI).

But it's no longer that simple. Bad cholesterol turns out to be part of a double act.

What's more, this discovery suggests that a new treatment for heart disease could be a simple vitamin tablet.

Researchers recently found that bad cholesterol has a twin called lipoprotein(a), which can also raise your risk of heart disease.

Having both of them would be a double whammy and raise the risk of blocked arteries even further.

Doctors have known for some time that people with a high level of Lp(a), as it is known, were more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke.

What wasn't certain was whether it could cause them or whether it was an innocent bystander.

Now, researchers have found a definite link between higher levels of lp(a) and cardiovascular problems.

'The work confirms unequivocally that Lp(a) is a causal factor for coronary heart disease,' says Dr Robert Clarke, of the Clinical trial service Unit at oxford University.

'The increased risk from high levels is only about a quarter the risk from lDl, but the hope is that by targeting both we will be able to reduce people's risk even further.'

Exactly why Lp(a) raises the risk of cardiovascular disease isn't clear yet, but it probably makes clots more likely. That's because it has another protein attached to it that helps clots form over damage to the arteries.

Your levels of Lp(a) are thought to be more the result of your genes than anything else. The good news is that it seems to respond to a number of different vitamins and supplements, the best known of which is the B vitamin niacin.

'Niacin is a fantastic all-round treatment for protecting hearts,' says Dr Sarah Jarvis, of the royal College of GPs. 'It brings down both LDL and Lp(a) and it also pushes up HDL.'

Is found naturally in liver, poultry and fish, although the best sources are wholegrains, nuts and dried beans. However, patients who are treated with niacin are usually given a 2g supplement a day - far more than you could get from food.

The problem with niacin supplements says Dr Jarvis, is the side-effect of 'flushing', in which the blood vessels dilate, making the skin blush and prompting a burst of warmth: 'Most patients can't tolerate it because it makes you flush very strongly. I get few repeat prescriptions with niacin.'

However, there is a new form of niacin that could get round this. Tredaptive has an added ingredient that blocks the chemical in niacin that normally causes flushing. (Tredaptive is now available on the NHS.)

But niacin isn't the only vitamin to bring down Lp(a). According to some clinicians, it also responds to other familiar supplements, such as vitamin C and fish oil.

Wendy Denning, a private GP working in London, often combines niacin with vitamin C for patients with raised levels of Lp(a).

So should we all have our Lp(a) levels tested right away? Most of the experts believe that it is too early for that.

'A lot of research still needs to be done,' says Dr Clarke. 'We'll have to do trials to prove that lowering it actually makes a difference, and we need to know more about how it harms the heart.'

JarvIs says she wouldn't usually test for Lp(a) unless she was faced with a puzzle.

'The familiar risk factors of high lDl - being overweight, smoking and so on - are pretty good predictors of high LP(a),' she explains.

'But if I had a patient who had a high risk from his family history, but all his other markers were surprisingly healthy, I might check out his Lp(a) to see if there was a hidden risk there."

The test can be carried out privately. But while there might not be a consensus on universal testing, there is no doubt that we have a new target to reduce heart disease risk.

'In ten years there may be a much wider range of targets that we can test and treat,' says Dr Jarvis. 'That should mean we'll be able to handle heart disease more effectively.'

Saving unwanted babies

PETALING JAYA: A non-profit organisation has set up the country’s first baby hatch for mothers to anonymously leave their unwanted newborns to be put up for adoption.

The hatch has a small door which opens to an incubator bed.

Once a baby is placed inside it and the door is closed, an alarm bell will alert the staff.

Risnawati Yassin, 35, who had no children after being married for five years, getting her two-month-old adopted child Mohd Farid Fatah Abdullah snuggled up inside a baby hatch that was launched yesterday. The hatch, launched by OrphanCARE, is designed to reduce the incidence of abandoned babies. — NORAFIFI EHSAN / The Star

Located at 6, SS1/24A, Kampung Tunku here, the hatch is run by OrphanCARE, a smart partner of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

OrphanCARE patron, the Sultanah of Pahang Sultanah Kalsom, said she hoped the establishment of the hatch could protect newborn babies and ensure that they would be placed in suitable families.

“Frequently, we read about cases of newborn babies being left on the streets or on a stranger’s doorstep.

“It can only come from an act of a mother’s desperation. Saving even a single life would make our efforts worthwhile,” she said in her speech at the launch of OrphanCARE’s administration and operation centre as well as the baby hatch.

Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the increase in cases of babies being abandoned was a disturbing trend.

Between 2005 and 2009, the police reported 407 such incidents in the country and 24 cases were recorded as of April this year.

Shahrizat said fear of punishment and disapproval of those around them usually compelled women or couples with unwanted babies to abandon them.

However, she stressed that the baby hatch was not an end-all solution to the problem.

“Such initiatives are part of the solution, a necessary stopgap measure to provide desperate mothers with an alternative to abandoning or taking the life of their child,” she said.

Shahrizat, who wept during her speech, said: “When I saw the baby hatch, I was heart-broken.”

She said the Government alone could not solve the problems and that parents should understand their responsibilities as well.

OrphanCARE president Datuk Adnan Mohd Tahir said women who dropped off their babies were encouraged to sign a consent form and leave their identification card numbers, which would be kept confidential.

The forms are placed outside the centre next to the hatch, he said, adding that the mothers’ details were important for the future of the babies.

So far, the organisation has nearly 200 parents on its list waiting to adopt unwanted babies, he added.

At the event, Shahrizat also announced a RM100,000 allocation from her ministry for OrphanCARE’s baby hatch programme.

Plans are afoot to set up more baby hatches in other areas.

The Procedures

Urinary Tract Infections

If you are finding yourself rushing to the bathroom a lot lately, and are experiencing painful urination, you may be suffering from a dreaded urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections are one the most common infections out there, affecting more than 10 million men and women every year. Women are much more likely to contract a urinary tract infection, with 50% of women experiencing at least one urinary tract infection in their lifetime. Though painful, urinary tract infections are easily treatable and do not usually result in health risk. With careful prevention, you can avoid ever having to deal with a urinary tract infection.

What are Urinary Tract Infections?

Urinary tract infections, or UTIs for short, are the result of an overgrowth of bacteria in your urethra, bladder, or kidneys. Urinary tract infections are caused by a variety of bacteria, but 85% of UTIs are started by E. coli. E. coli usually lives in your colon, but sometimes these bacteria can creep into your urethra, causing painful infection.

Your urinary tract is made up of two sections: the lower urinary tract and the upper urinary tract. Infections most commonly occur in the lower urinary tract, which contains your bladder and urethra. Infection of the urethra, or urethritis, occurs when bacteria, usually from your rectum, travel into your urethra and grow there. Bladder infection, or cystitis, occurs when bacteria travel up past the urethra and lodge in the bladder. Bladder infections are the most common form of UTI, and can often occur at the same time as urethritis.

Your upper urinary tract contains your two kidneys and the tube that connects them, called the ureters. If a lower urinary tract infection is not treated, the bacteria can easily travel up the ureters into the kidneys, causing chronic urinary tract infections. A kidney infection is called pyelonephritis, and requires immediate care. Kidney infections can cause kidney damage or even failure if left untreated for an extended period of time.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infection symptoms include a powerful urge to urinate, and a painful, burning sensation when you do. You may also be unable to empty your bladder completely when you try to urinate, and sometimes only a tiny amount of urine can be expelled. Other symptoms of a urinary tract infection include cloudy or smelly urine, or bloody urine.

Simple lower urinary tract infections generally have few other symptoms. More serious upper urinary tract infections may cause nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, dizziness, and pain in the lower back and abdomen. If you have these symptoms, contact your heath care provider.

Causes of Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infection causes are numerous. Some are easily preventable, while others are more difficult to stop. Here are some common methods of bacterial transmission:

* Wiping back to front after bowel movements. This can spread E.coli from the rectum to the urethra.

* Frequent sexual intercourse. Women can easily become infected with the bacteria because of constant movement and thrusting of her partner's penis.

* Pregnancy. Vaginal birth can cause trauma to the bladder, preventing urine from being expelled.

* Menopause. Changes in hormone levels cause physical changes resulting in ease of infection.

* Kidney Stones. Hard deposits of calcium that resemble small rocks can block the bladder, preventing all urine from being expelled.

Menopause and Urinary Tract Infections

Your chance of developing a urinary tract infection increases after you begin menopause. Many menopausal women don't even realize that they have a UTI because the infections are often symptomless during menopause. In fact, up to 25% of menopausal women will have a urinary tract infection and not even realize it. Recurrent urinary tract infection is also common.

During menopause, your estrogen levels gradually decline. This stops your ovulation and your menstruation, but it also causes other physical changes. The drop in your estrogen levels causes your bladder to become less elastic. You may be unable to completely empty your bladder, which can allow for the growth of bacteria. Your bladder may also develop small abscesses, called cystoceles, which can hold urine and bacteria.

Urine is generally very acidic, which helps to kill excess bacteria. After menopause, the acidity of your urine drops, allowing bacteria to flourish. The amount of lactobacilli in your body will also drop. Lactobacilli are protective organisms that help to stop foreign bacteria from infecting you.

Because of these changes, menopausal women are at an increased risk for urinary tract infections. As if your menopause symptoms weren't enough already, now you may also have to deal with the discomfort of recurrent urinary tract infections.

Urinary Tract Infection Treatments

A variety of simple treatments are available to cure urinary tract infections. It is important to treat UTIs as soon as possible, because they can cause permanent kidney problems. Urinary tract infection during pregnancy can sometimes cause premature birth.

* Antibiotics for urinary tract infections are the most effective treatment. More than 85% of cases can be cured with one simple dose of an oral antibiotic. More complicated cases involving kidney infection may involve antibiotic injection, or longer courses of oral antibiotics.
* Cranberries are thought to be an excellent natural cure for urinary tract infections. They work by killing bacteria in your urinary tract. Cranberries contain high doses of Vitamin C, which increase the acidity of your urine. This may increase pain during urination though.
* Blueberries contain proanthocyanidins, which prevent E.coli from attaching to the walls of your urinary tract. This will prevent future urinary tract infections.
* Castor oil is a good home remedy for urinary tract infection. It is thought to soothe inflammation in the abdomen. Apply oil directly to the skin, and cover with a warm washcloth or hot water bottle for 30 to 60 minutes.

Prevention

You can avoid dealing with urinary tracts infections by following these preventative measures:

* Drink lots of water. Water will flush out your system, preventing the growth of bacteria.
* Urinate when you have to. Ignoring the call of nature can cause your bladder to stretch and weaken. This can prevent the complete emptying of your bladder, leading to infection.
* Urinate after sex. Any bacteria that was transmitted during intercourse will be washed away.
* Wipe from front to back. This will prevent bacteria from your rectum being passed to your urethra.
* Avoid wearing tight clothing, bathing suits, or nylon panties for extended periods. They can trap moisture and cause bacteria to collect.
* Don't use moisturizers, douches, or heavily perfumed soaps around your urethra. This can cause irritation and may trap bacteria.

Does contagious yawning mean you're nice?

man yawning

You're in a conversation with another person and he casually yawns. As you wonder whether he's bored with the discussion, you find that you're yawning, too. A man walking by, sees you yawn, and pretty soon he yawns. It's carried on and on, passing from one person to another in a domino effect. Science is still investigating exactly what makes us yawn, but it's a well-known and little-studied fact: Yawning is contagious.

We know that much of yawning is due to suggestibility -- it's infectious. You don't need to actually see a person yawn to involuntarily yawn yourself; hearing someone yawn or even reading about yawning can cause the same reaction. Chances are you'll yawn at least once while reading this article.

But contagious yawning goes beyond mere suggestibility. Recent studies show that the phenomenon is also related to our predisposition toward empathy -- the ability to understand and connect with others' emotional states. It sounds strange, but whether or not you're susceptible to contagious yawning may actually be related to how much empathy you feel for others.

Empathy is an important part of cognitive development. We learn from an early age to value ourselves based on the amount and type of empathy our parents display, and developmental psychologists have found that people who weren't shown empathy by their parents struggle later on in life. A lack of early empathy has been shown to lead to the development of sociopathic behavior in adults [source: Montana].

So empathy is important, sure, but how could it possibly be related to contagious yawning? Leave it up to psychologists at Leeds University in England to answer that. In their study, researchers selected 40 psychology students and 40 engineering students. Each student was made to wait individually in a waiting room, along with an undercover assistant who yawned 10 times in as many minutes. The students were then administered an emotional quotient test: Students were shown 40 images of eyes and asked what emotion each one displayed.

The results of the test support the idea that contagious yawning is linked to empathy. The psychology students -- whose future profession requires them to focus on others -- yawned contagiously an average of 5.5 times in the waiting room and scored 28 out of 40 on the emotional test. The engineering students -- who tend to focus on things like numbers and systems -- yawned an average of 1.5 times and scored 25.5 out of 40 on the following test. The difference doesn't sound like much, but researchers consider it significant. Strangely, women, who are generally considered more emotionally attuned, didn't score any higher than men [source: The Telegraph].

These findings support what neurologists found through brain imaging: Contagious yawning is associated with the same parts of the brain that deal with empathy. These regions, the precuneus and posterior temporal gyrus, are located in the back of the brain. And although the link between contagious yawning and empathy has been established, explanations for the link are still being investigated.

Researchers are looking into the world of development disorders and at higher primates for answers to this riddle. In the next section, we'll look at the connection between empathy and animals, and we'll find out how autism affects empathy.

PM Malaysia Visits SS2 and Sea Park

PM: NKRA working well in hot spots like SS2

PETALING JAYA: The city’s iconic township of SS2 received the Prime Minister’s personal attention and he assured that crime hot-spots like the area will continue to be monitored and police patrols increased.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who had a walkabout in SS2 here yesterday, said the Sea Park Police Station, for instance, now had 218 personnel, compared to only 137 before the introduction of the National Key Result Areas (NKRA).

“With an additional 81 personnel there has been a marked improvement in crime prevention efforts. Residents tell me how safe they feel now,” he said.

Down to the ground: Najib having a meal at Nasi Kandar Pelita with his entourage during the walkabout in SS2 Wednesday.

“As what has been promised when we introduced the NKRA, efforts in reducing crime are obvious in the last three months.” .

Upon arriving at the Sea Park police station at 4pm yesterday, the Prime Minister was greeted by a nine-member guard-of-honour. He started his walkabout after a 10-minute meeting with Inspector-General Tan Sri Musa Hassan, Selangor police commissioner Deputy Commissioner Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Najib was greeted by a colour cardboard with “Thank you Prime Minister for making us safer” by the Community Policing Malaysia.

He walked past eateries and sundry shops, chatting with owners, workers and passers-by. He even stopped to admire watermelon and honeydew on display outside a vegetarian restaurant and chatted with its manager Ronnie Ong.

“It’s good meeting the Prime Minister himself,” the 62-year-old said.

Najib and his entourage then had tea at Pelita Nasi Kandar at 5pm.

Hope for unwanted babies

PETALING JAYA:
Suzie (not her real name), 19, was dazed and scared when she found out she was pregnant last year. Then, the student was dealt even worse news – her boyfriend told her he was unable to do anything and left her in the lurch.

Keeping it a secret from her family, Suzie finally found help through a friend who told her about OrphanCARE, a non-profit organisation for welfare and orphan management.

“She looked nervous when she first came for help and was extremely worried that her story would leak out to the authorities or family,” related OrphanCARE founding and committee member Azra Banu recently.

Suzie was sent for a medical check-up and counselling was provided to ensure she was clear about her choice of giving up her child and that her pregnancy would remain confidential, including from her family.

She gave birth four months later and her baby was handed to a foster couple, who were interviewed and selected by the organisation and Welfare Department prior to the birth.

Today, Suzie is back to her own life while the baby is under the love and care of his adoptive parents.

On Saturday, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry with the smart partnership of OrphanCARE set up the country’s first baby hatch for mothers to anonymously leave their unwanted newborns to be put up for adoption.

Other countries such as Germany, the United States, Japan, India and Pakistan have also implemented the baby hatch system to save babies and support mothers who are unable to care for their babies.

Controversial as it may sound, Azra said the implementation of baby hatch was crucial to help prevent unnecessary dumping and killing of infants from unwanted pregnancies.

“It is sad to hear of babies being dumped in drains or killed,” she said.

“We just want mothers to not kill their babies as they can drop off the babies at our centre.”

Azra added that mothers, regardless of whether they were Muslim or non-Muslim should not be afraid to come forward because details provided were strictly confidential even among the OrphanCARE staff.

“Our emphasis is only on the baby, not the mother,” she said.

Manager: RM6,000 in items missing from repossessed car

KUALA LUMPUR: A-26-year-old restaurant manager alleged that some RM6,000 worth of items from his car had gone missing after the car was repossessed by parties hired by the finance company.

Lee Kim Han said the items were no longer in his car after he went to reclaim his car from a storeyard in Sungai Serai near Kajang.

Relating the incident to MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong, Lee said the whole episode had started on Wednesday when he was stopped by a man driving a taxi outside Pudu Plaza in Pudu. The man had produced a letter and asked him to hand over the car.

An argument ensued as Lee refused to do so.

Lee said the man threatened to knock him down him with the taxi.

Lee then allowed the man to repossesss the car.

The next day, Lee paid up the arrears and went to take his car at a storeyard.

Upon checking the car, Lee claimed several items, including a Smart Tag, Touch n Go card, a DVD player and other musical and sound system appliances were missing.

Chong said he has contacted the finance company urging it to conduct an investigation into the case.

Should no action be taken, Chong said he would reveal the name of the finance company.

World’s Most Tattooed Woman

.

Julia Gnuse – nicknamed the ‘illustrated lady’ – has 95 per cent of her body covered in ink, ranging from jungle scenes and cartoons to her favourite actors. Miss Gnuse, from California, started getting tattoos on her legs after developing a skin condition called porphyria, which causes the skin to blister when exposed to sunlight.

In an interview, Miss Gnuse said although the ink did not stop her skin from blistering, it covered up the scars and allowed her to be exposed to the sun. ‘I had a friend who is a plastic surgeon, who suggested tattooing my skin the same color to the scarring that I had, seeing if we can match my just pale-looking skin that I had.’ Miss Gnuse said every one of her designs had been created by the same tattoo artist. Miss Gnuse features in the 2011 Guiness World Records book.
