Hope for unwanted babies

PETALING JAYA:
Suzie (not her real name), 19, was dazed and scared when she found out she was pregnant last year. Then, the student was dealt even worse news – her boyfriend told her he was unable to do anything and left her in the lurch.

Keeping it a secret from her family, Suzie finally found help through a friend who told her about OrphanCARE, a non-profit organisation for welfare and orphan management.

“She looked nervous when she first came for help and was extremely worried that her story would leak out to the authorities or family,” related OrphanCARE founding and committee member Azra Banu recently.

Suzie was sent for a medical check-up and counselling was provided to ensure she was clear about her choice of giving up her child and that her pregnancy would remain confidential, including from her family.

She gave birth four months later and her baby was handed to a foster couple, who were interviewed and selected by the organisation and Welfare Department prior to the birth.

Today, Suzie is back to her own life while the baby is under the love and care of his adoptive parents.

On Saturday, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry with the smart partnership of OrphanCARE set up the country’s first baby hatch for mothers to anonymously leave their unwanted newborns to be put up for adoption.

Other countries such as Germany, the United States, Japan, India and Pakistan have also implemented the baby hatch system to save babies and support mothers who are unable to care for their babies.

Controversial as it may sound, Azra said the implementation of baby hatch was crucial to help prevent unnecessary dumping and killing of infants from unwanted pregnancies.

“It is sad to hear of babies being dumped in drains or killed,” she said.

“We just want mothers to not kill their babies as they can drop off the babies at our centre.”

Azra added that mothers, regardless of whether they were Muslim or non-Muslim should not be afraid to come forward because details provided were strictly confidential even among the OrphanCARE staff.

“Our emphasis is only on the baby, not the mother,” she said.
