Tattoo

MARKED for life

PHOTOCOPY: People get memorial tattoos to remind them of a loved one

TATTOOS are no longer a taboo in today’s society. In fact, tattoos are now anything but. Ranging from an art form to a memory of a loved one, getting inked in this day and age is not only for criminals and bad hats.

Malay Mail spoke to Joshua Jay Nonis, 33, Kevin Mitchel De Souza, 30, and Elton Ike Nonis, 36, who run Blackcat Tattoo Studio in Sunway Pyramid to find out more about how tattoos are slowly seeping into the Malaysian culture, and of course some wise words from the experts for those out there who are thinking of
jumping on the bandwagon and taking the plunge.

How long have you been in this line?
Joshua: 13 years.
Kevin: Three years.
Elton: One and a half years.

What were you doing before?
Joshua: I studied computer graphics and got a job designing web pages that I didn't like so I left it to try out tattooing as a career.
Kevin/Elton: We were working in a production house as assistant producers.

What made you start out doing tattoos and how?
Joshua: I had a lot of friends from Singapore when I was growing up and many of them had tattoos, so that sort of sparked an interest for me. A group of us started doing hand-poked tattoos for each other. I got my first tattoo when I was 14. Then we started coming up with ways to make tattoo machines out of mechanical pencils and the motors out of toy cars. When I was a bit older I started to go to Singapore to get tattooed. It all evolved from there.
Kevin: I learned how to tattoo from Joshua quite some time ago, but I didn't really take it seriously. At that time, tattooing was basically a hobby. I used to be a DJ in my hometown Malacca by night and use to tattoo in the afternoons. I made the decision to make tattooing as my career as soon as the decision of the birth of Blackcat Tattoo Studio evolved.
Elton: Ever since I was a kid, I loved to draw but never thought that I would be a tattoo artist. My younger brother Joshua is the one that taught me everything. He guided me all the way to where I am right now.

What is the weirdest thing you've tattooed on someone?
Joshua: I once tattooed a hand print on the back of someone's head.
Kevin: Stick man and woman.

tatts
What is the weirdest place you've tattooed?
Joshua: Besides the head? I tattooed a cupid on a guy's butt.
Kevin: On the back of someone's toes. All five of them.

Why do people come in and get tattoos?
Joshua: Some people get memorial tattoos to remind them of a person, time, pet, etc. Some people get tattooed just because they like the art form. I have even tattooed a good-luck mole on someone's face!
Kevin: Different reasons. Those who are art lovers, those who believe in lucky charms even those who want to get tattoos of their favourite celebrity, sports person or team.

Considering that you're pretty inked as well, what is the most significant tattoo you have that holds the most meaning to you?
Joshua: I have a tattoo of my dog's paw print on my chest that I did after she passed away a few years ago.
Kevin: I have a tattoo on my whole entire chest dedicated to my family.
Elton: I have my first daughter's name tattooed on my back neck. It hurt like hell but it was worth it. Planning
my second daughter's name on the right side of my neck.

What is your take on people tattooing names of boyfriends/girlfriends on themselves?
Joshua: I think it's a bad idea.
Kevin: Only if you want to jinx the relationship.
Elton: As for me, I think it's up to them. I had my girlfriend’s name tattooed on me and now I am married to her.

Does getting a tattoo hurt and which part the most?
Joshua: Yes, tattoos hurt. The armpit and rib area are pretty painful.
Kevin: Pain levels are bearable depending on which part of the body.
Elton: As for me, ribs, neck and stomach hurt the most.

tatts
How old is the oldest and youngest person you've tattooed?
Joshua: The oldest person I have tattooed was in his 60s. The youngest was when I was a kid doing hand-poked tattoos.

Give a word of advice to people out there thinking of getting a tattoo?
Joshua: Take your time. Make sure the tattoo studio you choose is fully equipped with an autoclave. Make sure the studio uses new needles for each and every tattoo they do. Proper sterilisation is the most important thing to look for. Make sure you are comfortable with the tattoo artist. Look through his/her portfolio before hand.
Kevin: Make sure proper sterilisation is looked out for and try to catch the artist in action.
Elton: It's always good to know what you want before going into a tattoo studio. Browse the internet to look for some references, and don't rush into things. An autoclave is a must in a tattoo studio.

Kid Chan's Story of Inspiration

Kid Chan meeting Prime Minister (2002)
Kid Chan meeting Prime Minister (2002)

Inspired by Dr Mahathir

Photography started out as a hobby and passion for me. I graduated from the Curtin University of Technology with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. I could not have imagined that what started as a sabbatical from my corporate job would one day turn into a full-fledged professional career for me.

I had the following incident to thank for driving and inspiring me to achieve something out of it.

The incident: as a blessed young photographer in 2002, I was honoured to be commissioned as an official photographer to the wedding of the then Chief Justice's son Azlan Tun Dzaiddin to the then Grand Chamberlain's daughter Sharifah Nurafazan Syed Danial.

After taking the formal group shot, including His Majesty the King, HRH Sultan of Selangor, HRH Yam Tuan of Negeri Sembilan & Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohammed walked right up to me.

He asked if I was working for the hotel or doing business on my own. Slightly shocked and a bit nerve wrecked, I answered in English that I was doing business. He commended me and encouraged me to strive harder. It was then, I caught a vision that my hobby could be much bigger that what it may be.

Till today his encouraging words still rings in my head and in my heart. I hope my children will know that not only did Dr M have a big hand in shaping our Malaysia into a modern and dynamic country, he also helped shape their daddy’s future.

For that, I am eternally grateful to this visionary.

DIY way to beat recession

While it may be the easiest thing to have your clothes washed, dried and pressed at the laundrette or send your car to the car wash, it may not always be the cheapest option. The Life & Times team gives some tips for recessionistas to undertake simple tasks without burning a hole in their pocket.

pix_topright

PAMPER ME

WE all love spending an afternoon at the spa. But it doesn’t have to cost a bomb if you know how to do it in the comfort of your own home and when everything you need can be found in your kitchen!

Start by boiling a kettle of water. Then break an egg and separate the white. Cut two slices of cucumber.

While waiting for the water to boil, wash your face with a cleanser. A foaming cleanser would be better as it would remove oil and dirt more effectively.
pix_middle

Once the water starts boiling, pour it into a basin large enough to cover your face. Gently lean over the basin and allow the steam from the hot water to open the pores of your skin.

It is more effective if you put a towel over your head and not let the steam escape. Take care not to burn your face; keep your face a few inches away from the basin and let your face steam for about five minutes.

Next, take the egg white and rub it all over your face, except the eye area. You will feel your skin tightening. Don’t worry because this is normal. Lie down and place the cucumber slices on your eyes which are excellent for dark circles and eyebags. Leave the egg white and cucumber slices on for about 10 minutes.

When done, throw cucumber slices away and rinse your face off with warm water and then wash again with your cleanser. Your skin should feel tightened, refreshed, and revitalised.

You can also substitute the egg white mask with a mask made of yoghurt, turmeric, honey and oatmeal if you have dry skin. This mask would also help exfoliate skin and draw out impurities.

Tip: Take an ice cube and rub it all over the face first thing in the morning. It is an excellent pick-me-up.

LOVE YOUR LAUNDRY

DOING the laundry is something most people dread. With laundry services available in almost all neighbourhoods, it's easy to just drop off your dirty laundry and pick them up, all clean and crisp a few days later.

Although bigger and heavier materials such as curtains, bedspreads and blankets can be sent to the laundrette or to the dhoby, shirts, T-shirts, shorts, long pants, blouses, skirts and even dresses can be easily washed at home. Imagine your washing machine as your personal laundromat.

The first rule of doing laundry is to separate the whites from the coloureds. You don’t want to see your white shirt turn pink from the colour that ran from your red blouse. Similarly, soft fabric such as silk, wool and lace should be washed separately.

Also, sort materials that produce lint (those clinging bits of fibre or fluff) such as towels, flannel and chenille. These tend to stick on other clothes if washed together.

Remember that some undergarments, especially underwired bras, are best hand-washed so that the wires do not get twisted or mangled.

Don’t forget to empty pockets of coins, handkerchiefs or facial tissues. Coins can sometimes dislodge in the washing machine while facial tissues shred into a million bits and stick to other clothes.

If stains are obvious on clothes, spray stain remover or rub some liquid detergent on the stains before putting them into the wash. Always turn clothes inside out to prevent colour fading.

Add the right amount of detergent according to the washing machine instructions or measurement specified on detergent packaging.

Wash soft fabrics in the soft wash cycle. Wash in either hot or cold water according to care instructions on clothes’ labels. If you don’t have a dryer, just hang them out in the sun, once again turned inside out, until they’re dry. Don’t leave them out too long as colours fade faster.

HOUSE CLEANING FOR DUMMIES

THE most basic thing when it comes to house cleaning is taking care of the floor.

With a bit of “coaching” anyone can mop and clean pretty decently.

Give the rooms a good sweep before mopping. This will remove the grainy and sandy particles, not to mention the hair and dust clumps that will stubbornly refuse to disintegrate no matter how rigorously you mop. This will also save you precious time later when you have to clean the mop.

You need a bucket of water, a good mop and some floor cleaner (preferably something bio-degradable) to get the job done. Mopping with just water will not remove any grime nor disinfect the floor, so I would advise against it. Also, make sure to follow the correct ratio of water to floor cleaner, otherwise, you'll end up with a very soapy floor that may need to be wiped down with water. It’s certainly a hassle you can do without.

Wring the mop off excess water, grip the handle like you would a hockey stick, and mop away. After a dozen or so swipes, rinse the mop in the bucket of soapy water and continue mopping.

When the water looks murky, change it. It’s also a good idea to keep the fan on while you mop. That way, you’ll get to enjoy some cool air as you work, the floor will dry faster and there’s less chance of finding dirty footprints on the pristine floor later.

FIX THAT FAUCET

THERE is nothing quite as annoying as having a leaky tap in the dead of the night. But why burn a hole in your pocket hiring a plumber when you can do it yourself at a fraction of the cost?

All you need is a new tap washer and a wrench or spanner.

Start by turning off the water supply, either at the mains or at the tap head nearest to the leaky tap. Then turn the affected tap fully on.

Unscrew the tap head and remove the top of the tap. You will find the washer (a small ring-like rubber piece) fitted loosely inside the tap. Replace the old washer with a new one. Screw the tap head back on.

Turn on the water supply at the mains and when the water flows through the affected outlet, turn the tap off. Check for drips and leaks. If the washer was the problem, there shouldn’t be any more drips or leaks.

The advice from professional plumbers is not to over-tighten the tap when turning it off as this can damage the washers.

And if you have a clogged kitchen sink, a simple sink plunger will solve your problem.

Block the overflow holes and other openings by stuffing wet rags into them. If there is no water in the clogged basin, run about 8cm of water over the drain hole, place the plunger over the hole and force it down several times. If the water still does not flow properly, repeat the process until the water in the sink flows down the drain smoothly.

As some food debris will inevitably get washed down the kitchen sink, it's advisable to pour a kettle of boiling water down the drainhole once a week to clear the pipes.

WORK OUT WHILE YOU WASH

CONTRARY to what many might think, washing your own car can be quite fun. What's more, you save about RM12 and get a good work-out to boot!

All you need is car shampoo, a car wash sponge, two pieces of soft cloth — not terry cloth towels because the fibres cannot pick up dirt — a pail and water.

Choose a shady spot to wash your car. If you cannot find one, the best time to do it is early in the morning or late evening. It would be less hot then.

Start by hosing down your car with water to remove grime and loose debris.

Mix the shampoo with water in a pail — follow the instructions on the bottle — and with a cloth or soft sponge start covering the entire body of the car with the shampoo solution.

It’s easier to start with the roof. Stand on a stool to get to the hard-to-reach places. Work your way down the car, washing the windows, doors, the bonnet, bumper and lights. Then rinse the foam from the top down, using a gentle stream of water. Lastly, don't forget to wash the wheels, hubcaps and sides of the tires and then rinse thoroughly.

When you are done with the washing and rinsing, it is important to dry your car to prevent water spots. Water spots are caused by mineral deposits that etch the outline of a drop of water onto your vehicle's paint.

You also need to wipe the water from inside the trunk, hood and doors and other hidden areas; otherwise water will drip in and leave spots.

If you feel like it, you can vacuum the interior of your car.

Now that is done, you have a clean and sparkling car. It may be hard work but the end result is satisfying. NST, Malaysia

BREATHING THERAPY

A breathing therapy that can help you to cure headache. Try it and prove it yourself.

Our noses have left and right nostrils. Are these nostrils having the same function for inhaling (breathe in) and exhaling (breathe out)?

Actually it's not the same and we can feel the difference. Accordingly, the right side represents the sun and the left side represents the moon..

When having headache, try to close your right nostril and use your left nostril to do breathing for about 5 min. The headache will be gone.

If you feel too tired, do it the opposite way. Close your left nostril and breathe through your right nostril. After a while, you will feel refresh again..

Because the right side belongs to heat, so it gets hot easily. The left side gets cold easily.

Women breathe mainly with their left nostril, so they get calm down easily.

Men breathe mostly with their right nostril, so they get angry easily.

When we wake up, do we notice which nostril breathes faster? Is it the left side or the right side?

If the left nostril breathes faster, you will feel very tired. Close your left nostril and use your right nostril for breathing and you will get refresh quickly..

You can teach your kids about it. The effect of breathing therapy is much better for adults.

I used to have painful headache. When consulted a doctor, he told me jokingly," You will be all right if you get married!" The doctor did not bullshit me as he had his theory and supported with testimony.

During that time, I used to have headache every night and I was not able to study. I took medicine but I was not cured.

One night as I sat down to medidate, I closed my right nostril and breathed with my left nostril. In less than a week, it seemed that my headache problem had left me! I continued doing it for about a month and since then there was no recurrence of headache in me.

This is my own experience. I used to tell others who also suffer headache to try this method as it was effective for me. It also works for those who have tried as well. This is a natural therapy, unlike taking medicines for a long time may have side effect. So, why don't you try it out?

Practice the correct ways of breathing (breathe in and breathe out) and your body will be in a very relaxing condition.

Jermain Wants Michael Jackson to Be Buried at Neverland

"Kami perlu menyimpan beberapa rahsia," tambah Bratton.

Jackson Family Gave LAPD Doctor List

Michael JacksonLaw enforcement sources tell TMZ Michael Jackson's family has given the LAPD a list of doctors they believe may have misprescribed drugs to Michael Jackson -- and we've learned Dr. Arnold Klein is on that list.

Dr. Klein came out swinging today on TV, denying he ever prescribed powerful painkillers to Jackson. But the family has its suspicions and passed its concerns along to detectives.

How Michael Jackson Died

Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009, at his home in Los Angeles, California, reportedly one hour after receiving an injection of pethidine (Demerol), a painkiller to which his friends say he was addicted.[1] His personal physician, Conrad Murray, says he found Jackson in bed, not breathing but with a faint pulse, and administered CPR to no avail. Murray has said he did not prescribe or furnish Jackson with Demerol.[2]

His death triggered an outpouring of grief around the world, creating surges of Internet traffic and causing his album sales to soar.[3] He had been scheduled to perform 50 sold-out concerts to over one million people at London's O2 arena, from July 13, 2009 to March 6, 2010; during a press conference, Jackson implied those would have been the final concerts of his career.[4]

Final farewell to an angel: Ryan O'Neal leads mourners at Farrah Fawcett's funeral

Hollywood stars gathered in a Los Angeles cathedral on Tuesday to pay tribute to Charlie Angel's actress Farrah Fawcett, who died of cancer last week.

Heartbroken Ryan O'Neal and Farrah's father James Fawcett said goodbye to the Seventies pin-up at a private funeral service, held fittingly at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Ryan, 68, was seen weeping as he lifted Farrah's dark brown casket covered in orange and yellow flowers while surrounded by police.

Ryan and Farrah's troubled son Redmond, 24, was given special permission to leave jail - where he has been serving time for drug charges - to attend the funeral in the presence of two police deputies and a sergeant.

Redmond, who was allowed to visit his mother at her bedside before she died, read Lamentations 3: 17 - 26 from the Bible, while his father read Wisdom 3: 1- 9.

Guests were given an order with service with a glamorous Farrah wearing a a sequinned dress and given her famous smile to the camera.

The order of service also included a few lines of the James Joyce poem At That Hour.

The star-studded service came just five days after the 62-year-old lost her long battle against cancer.

Representing Farrah's most popular TV show Charlie's Angels was her former co-star Kate Jackson, who looked sombre in a black dress and sunglasses as she entered the cathedral.

Among the mourners was Farrah's best friend Alana Stewart, who along with Ryan, was at the actress's bedside when she passed away.

Alana, who produced Farrah's cancer documentary Farrah's Story, said: 'She was much more than a friend; she was my sister.

'Although I will miss her terribly, I know in my heart that she will always be there as that angel on the shoulder of everyone who loved her.'

Ryan and Redmond were also supported by the actor's eldest son Griffin O'Neal, 44.

Other guests in attendance included veteran actor Dick Van Patten, model Cheryl Tiegs and Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson.

Fans who gathered outside to pay respects to their idol were kept a safe distance away by police.

Speaking of his loss last week, Ryan said: 'After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away.

'Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world.'

Farrah and Ryan met in 1981 and had a son, Redmond, but never married. After separating in the 1990s, they were reunited and had intended to marry before her death.
